Becoming A Member
The Christians life is not meant to be lived in isolation. There is no such thing as a "Lone Ranger" Christian. As followers of Christ we are to live our lives in the context of connected, authentic relationships. The Christian life is designed to be done TOGETHER. We are to connect in fellowship, community, and life. Being a follower of Christ is more that just believing; it's belonging.
What are the benefits of connecting with other believers in the local church?
It identifies me as a genuine believer. (Eph. 2:19; Rom. 12:5)
It provides a spiritual family to support and encourage me in my walk with Christ. (Gal. 6:1-2; Heb. 10:24-25)
It gives me a place to discover and use my gifts in ministry. (1 Cor. 12:4-27)
It places me under the spiritual protection of godly leaders. (Heb. 13:17; Acts 20:28-29)
It gives me the accountability that I need to grow. (5:21)
What are the requirements for connecting in membership with FBC Overton?
There are four requirements: 1) profession of faith in Christ as Savior (i.e., connected with God through a personal relationship with Jesus); 2) declaration of faith through baptism (immersion in water), 3) agreement to follow the provisions of Church Constitution & Bylaws, and 4) connection to church body through covenant to a mutual relationship between member and church.
What are the procedures for joining the membership of FBC Overton?
There are three ways that you may publicly align yourself with the
membership of FBC.
1. Profession of Faith & Baptism
You may join by publicly confessing your faith in Christ as Savior and declaring that faith through water baptism under the authority of First Baptist Church Overton.
2. Promise of Letter
As a member of another Baptist church of like faith and order, should God lead you here, we will be happy to welcome you into our church family on promise of letter of recommendation from the church of your current membership.
3. Statement of Faith & Baptism
In the event your church membership records are not available for a transfer from another Baptist Church, or if you were once a member of a Baptist Church of like faith and order, you may join upon your statement of salvation and scriptural baptism.
Is baptism required for church membership?
Baptism is not a matter of personal preference, but a command of the scriptures. At FBC, we require those who have not been baptized by immersion or who come from a church that does not share a Baptist faith and practice toward baptism to be baptized.
Our goal is not to question a person's salvation experience or to diminish his or her Christian heritage but to unite our membership in belief and practice.
